Ahmad Shah Durrani used the chaos present in Persia and India at the time to establish his own Durrani Empire and perhaps unknowingly, set the foundation for the modern nation-state of Afghanistan. Throughout the course of his 25 year long reign, he launched numerous invasions of India, conquering vast tracts of land in the Punjab. With the once powerful Mughal Empire on its deathbed, Ahmad Shah saw India as a cash cow that could be exploited for its many resources. In 1761, he fought and defeated the surging Marathas at the Battle of Panipat. In Persia, he brought prominent cities such as Nishapur and Mashad to submission. Having established his capital at Kandahar, Ahmad Shah had established a state that its peak in the 1760s was the second biggest empire in the Islamic world after the Ottomans. Little did he know that within 50 years of his death, his empire would itself be on the verge of destruction.
