Fault tolerance is when a computer can continue functioning and returning useful results despite the occurrence of intermediate errors or faults. In this video, we explore the tools that will be leveraged to reach fault-tolerant quantum computation. In particular, we review the roles of quantum error suppression, mitigation, and correction. Finally, we emphasize how the IBM Quantum roadmap paves the way not just to fault tolerance, but to large-scale fault tolerance.
