How much weight can you carry? When it comes to your long-term health, that question matters more than you might think.
The farmer’s carry is one of the most powerful exercises you can do for longevity — and one of the most underrated. Grab some heavy weights, stand tall, walk with good posture. That’s it. Here’s why it deserves a spot in your routine:
👊 Grip strength is a legit longevity marker. One study published in 2015 (Lancet) found grip strength was more predictive of death than blood pressure. Let that sink in.
🦴 But it goes way beyond grip. Bone density, core strength, balance, and posture — multiple studies link loaded carries to all of these. Everything you need to age well, in one exercise.
🏋️ It also activates your entire nervous system and provides direct protection against insulin resistance, sarcopenia, and cardiovascular disease — the big three of aging.
In the reel I share the standards I’ve used for over 15 years of personal training to test carrying capacity — the same table I use to spot red flags and set goals with my clients. Use it to see where you stand for your age. And if you’re not there yet, that’s exactly why we train. Your body is remarkably adaptable at any age — give it the right stimulus and it will respond. With grip strength being such a powerful predictor of how we age, this one’s worth prioritizing.
If you do test yourself, (and I hope you do!) let me know how it went!
