How much terrain is enough on a wargames table? It’s a common question for miniature wargamers and a surprisingly tricky one to answer. In this episode, I respond to a viewer question about Neil Thomas’s minimalist approach to terrain and share my own thoughts on why more is definitely more, especially for smaller-scale games like 6mm and 2mm.
Drawing on my own experience setting up tables for casual games, club nights, and big demo events, I explore the balance between too little and too much terrain, how different rulesets and figure scales affect terrain density, and whether terrain should always have a gameplay function. I also challenge the well-known “1/3 rule” and explain why I think terrain-as-set-dressing has a vital role to play in making games more immersive.
If you love wargaming hobby chat and are passionate about building beautiful and playable battlefields, this episode is for you.
