One of the largest eels in the world, the longfin eel or ōrea are endemic to the rivers and lakes of New Zealand and have an incredible life cycle. Longfin eels are known for their longevity with some living up to 80 years old and reaching lengths of up to two meters.
Once they reach sexual maturity (around 25 years) they travel from our New Zealand rivers all the way out to Tonga and New Caledonia to breed.
