Is "The Cold Doctor" a personality trait or a survival tactic? 🩺🛡

We often talk about the "hardening" of physicians during residency. But after looking at the literature (and my own career), I’ve realized it’s rarely a permanent change in who we are. It’s accumulated defense.

When we run out of bandwidth, we depersonalize. When systems fail us, we grow cynical. But because these traits are learned in context, they can also soften when the context improves.
