Floods are becoming more frequent and severe in Mali — and displaced families face the highest risks.
In 2024 alone, flooding affected more than 733,000 people and over 121,000 households across the country. For internally displaced persons (IDPs), heavy rains can quickly turn into life-threatening disasters.
UNDRR, UNHCR and the Mali Shelter Cluster are working together to reduce flood risk before the next storm hits. From building drainage channels in IDP settlements in Timbuktu, to strengthening early warning systems, preparedness planning and community participation, partners are shifting from emergency response to anticipatory action.
By integrating flood risk management, protection, gender considerations and local leadership, Mali is taking practical steps to build safer, more resilient IDP settlements — and protect lives and livelihoods when floods strike. 🌧️🏠
