J-pop was the dominant, most popular music in East Asia in the late 90s and 2000s. It felt like Japanese music would stay on top for a long time.
Yet, by the late 2000s, Japan's neighbor, Korea, had their own brand of music called K-pop starting to become the new "it", popular music. By 2009, J-pop's long reign of being the most popular Asian music ended, as K-pop overtook J-pop in popularity.
We take a look on how K-pop became more popular than J-pop globally, as well as K-pop in 2009.
