Aquaponic systems require much more filtration than hydroponic systems because plant nutrition has to be processed before it’s available to plants.

Here’s how it works:
- Fish are fed protein.
- Fish produce ammonia/ammonium.
Ammonia/ammonium has to be transformed and solids have to be filtered so that they don’t cause anaerobic decomposition farther along in the system.

If you dumped the ammonia and ammonium straight into the crops-side of the system, you would crash the oxygen.
