💡In this video I’ll show you how I use color theory to help me decide upon the colors in my fashion shoots.
If you follow my work you know that color is an extremely important part of my style in my portfolio. Like anything worth doing, it’s important to study up and familiarize yourself on the subject, which is why I encourage you to learn about color theory as it has helped me tremendously in my shoots.
Color theory allows you to see what colors play nicely together. I’m sure you’ve seen the ubiquitous color wheel before and probably have even used it on different occasions, but do you truly know “why” certain colors harmonize better than others?
One way that I use the color wheel for my shoots is by selecting the dominant color in the shoot and then run through different color harmonies that will complimentary to the main color. (Check out color.adobe.com).
Now one such color harmony is ‘triadic’. What that means is that the colors are evenly spaced on the color wheel, so when I select my dominant color, the other 2 colors will be my complimentary colors.
After selecting these colors I instantly know the direction I want to take with my shoot. It might take some adjusting but I feel much more confident that I have selected colors that will play nice together.
So let’s break down the lighting:
For this shoot I used 4 different strobes:
💡 Main light: Beauty dish with Grid
💡 Light 2 - fill light - arge umbrella with diffusion
💡 Light 3 - Small umbrella - background light
💡 Light 4 - Small umbrella - background light
