In 1949, the government of the Republic of China was defeated in the Chinese Civil War. The Nationalist Government, led by the Kuomintang Party's Chiang Kai-shek, fled the advancing People’s Liberation Army to Taiwan, along with two million troops and civilians. The CCP, once led by Mao Zedong, has been China’s incumbent party ever since. Gao Binghan escaped to Taiwan alone at the age of 13. This is his story of survival.
