Even though it is much easier to work stranded knitting in the round, sometimes you might need to work it flat. One example would be the top part of a Norwegian sweater. The knitter will work the body of the sweater in the round until she reaches the armhole, then work flat for front and back, avoiding the steel. Or so I have heard.
