This video is a little different from my usual uploads because it began life as my guest artist workshop for the 2026 Virtual Blythe Retreat, hosted by Tammy of @TammyPowley and Terry of @BeCreativewithTerryJeanette .

This year’s retreat theme was Dance Like No One Is Watching, and my assignment was to create a setting for Blythe around that idea.

Rather than starting with a craft project, I started with a character.

I imagined my Blythe, Heavenly Strawberry, as a creative young woman living in the city who has claimed the rooftop of her apartment building as her own little place to dance, practice, make content, or simply move when nobody else is watching.

From there, I built her world.

In this long-form workshop, I take you through the entire process of creating the rooftop scene—from the painted golden-hour city background and concrete rooftop floor to the parapet wall, rooftop access structure, graffiti, lights, dance space and all of the little details that help turn a diorama into a story.

You are completely welcome to recreate this rooftop along with me, borrow whatever ideas speak to you, or go completely rogue and use the same process to build an entirely different world for your own doll.

That is really the heart of what I do here at The Dolls, The Witch & The Wardrobe.

I believe doll collecting becomes much more interesting when we move beyond simply acquiring things and begin doing something with the dolls we already love—styling them, making for them, building little worlds around them and letting them become characters in our own visual stories.

For me, that is Restorative Play.

A huge thank you to Tammy and Terry for inviting me to participate as a guest artist in the Virtual Blythe Retreat, and for giving me permission to share my complete workshop here with all of you. I hope you’ll make yourself something lovely, pull a doll off the shelf, and come build a little world with me.
