So if you told me 15 years ago that I'd one day be building a custom #airhockeytable, I probably would have wondered at which point my life went totally off the rail. But that's the thing about getting into console modding and electronics hobbies, as they fill your head with crazy ideas but also teaches you the skillsets to actually pull them off!
And Christmas 2021, one such crazy idea came to be and Christmas 2023, the idea finally materialized into one of the coolest things I've ever built!
Of course, this was a team effort between myself and co-owner of the @BitBuilt forums, CRASH BASH, who's software development skills were paramount in adding all the flashy stuff! So a huge thank you goes out to him.
On a more somber note though, back in August the BitBuilt and modding communities in general lost one of the most talented and fun loving members there was. I just wanted to take this opportunity to acknowledge this loss and to give a heartfelt farewell to Aaron Silberman, a.k.a. POSTMAN. 2023 has been brutally unfair in so many ways and his passing was a hard one to accept. Fly high my friend!
Time Stamps
:40 - Project Origin
1:22 - Features
1:58 - Mechanics
2:52 - Fabrication
5:08 - Wiring Up
5:52 - Pi Functions
6:52 - Emulation Functions
7:17 - LED Mimic Feature
!*Doom Emulation Explanation*!
So for the sake of full transparency, I realize that a big part of this project is the emphasis on its ability to play Doom. And though I mention it, I never actually show the game being played on the screens or table itself. This is because though when we were doing the initial testing and running the games via Retro Pie, everything was great and the concept of playing Doom on the screen and table was proven in theory.
However, after Crash left and we tried to implement Emulation Station into our custom framework (basically being able to push the Emulation button on the control leg), things started to not cooperate. And of course, time, real life and other such constraints made it not really possible get working correctly to include in this video.
But I will more than likely be doing a more "non-formal" kind of overview of this table that explains more about the play modes and actual game play and hopefully that time we'll have it sorted out.
So thank you guys so much for checking this out though! A lot of work went into both this table and video so I hope you enjoy!
