▶️Introduction
Fusible plugs are used to protect machinery items from over temperature. A fusible plug consists of a plug body and fusible alloy. A straight or tapered line is drilled through the fusible plug body then the space is filled with fusible alloy.
Fusible plugs are often used in compressed air systems, wellheads and for boilers (both firetube and watertube).
How Fusible Plugs Work
The fusible alloy is often tin whilst the body is manufactured from copper-based alloys such as brass, bronze or gun metal. The fusible alloy has a lower melting temperature than the plug body. If the fusible plug is exposed to high temperatures, the alloy melts whilst the body does not.
Once the alloy melts, the steam or compressed air can escape. Compressed air is usually vented. Steam is usually discharged to the firebox or furnace where the boiler flame is extinguished. Extinguishing the boiler flame ensures the boiler’s pressure and temperature do not increase still further.
General Notes
ASME (boiler and pressure vessel code) requires all coal fired fire tube boilers to utilise fusible plugs, but there is no such requirement for gas or light fuel oil fired boilers.
It is general good practice to replace fusible plugs at scheduled intervals e.g. annually.
Fusible plugs may be located on the front sheet, rear sheet or crown sheet of the boiler. There is usually only one plug per boiler.
Fusible plugs may be water side, or, fire side plugs. Water side plugs are screwed from the water side into the fire side; the opposite is true for fire side plugs.
