"It's the most liberating freedom and independence," said Bill DeMaio of Newington, who has had a Fidelco guide dog for the last 14 years.

Fidelco, a recognized leader in the guide dog industry out of Bloomfield, trains and breeds exclusively German Shepherds. While a service dog can cost between $47,000 to $65,000 to train, Fidelco provides its dogs for free, although owners pay for care and feeding of the animal.
