A question I' asked a lot is how do I know I'd like an author or a book I've not come across before? Well, I'm never sucke(re)d in by the cover, but a title can always pique my interest. A word, or a theme or idea suggested by the title is the first point of call. Here I recount a recent browse through one publisher's backlist, writing down 16 of the titles that most reached out to me and only then did I read up their blurbs to whittle the list down to 7 books which I then ordered. A process that began simply from their titles.

The publishers in question was Dalkey Archive, who mainly reprint books that they feel need to still be in print and read. A lot of books in translation.
