Several movies recently have decided to completely ruin their main character, like John Connor in Terminator: Dark Fate, and claim that it's to "subvert the audience's expectations," or otherwise surprise them. The results of this have been pretty bad for the movies and the fans themselves. So I figured I'd talk about that, and how surprise actually works in films.
