Toronto is home, and this year my sister and I went back as curators to play mas at Caribana. Every year I see the same comments (lewd, disgraceful, bad parenting) about the fact that I let my kids grow up inside this tradition. So this time I want to show you what Carnival actually is. Pretty mas was born from people who were told their skin was something to hide, deciding instead to make it the main piece of the outfit and decorate it in jewels, feathers and rhinestones. My friend Naomi Cowan put it perfectly: Carnival day is like a wedding day, the one day every girl gets her moment. You'll also catch us getting soaked at Niagara Falls and squeezing everything we could out of my city. Two truths can exist at the same time, and I'm raising my daughters to hold both.
