Corpus Christi produces about 5% of the United States’ gasoline, jet fuel and other refined petroleum products. That number translates into about 1 million barrels of refined products a day, including almost half a million barrels of gas. Out of the roughly 500,000 people who live in the area, these refineries also support around 115,000 jobs in the Coastal Bend region.
The city recently shared that they’re about two months away from a water supply emergency. Right now, they’re working on applying water limits to residents and businesses as well as a number of other solutions.
The Tribune's Laura Duclos explains how any kind of disruption, like a water limit, at refineries and export sites could tighten the supplies of gas, jet fuel, diesel and other petroleum products across Texas — potentially triggering a ripple effect that would spread to the rest of the country.
