Texas’ first 2026 primaries offered an early look at the state’s political battles heading into November, highlighted by a high profile U.S. Senate race. Republican Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton are headed to a May runoff after neither won a majority in the GOP primary, setting up a costly and divisive intraparty fight.

The race has already drawn massive spending, with tens of millions of dollars poured into the contest by campaigns and outside groups.

On the Democratic side, state Rep. James Talarico secured his party’s nomination and will face the Republican winner in November.

The Texas Tribune’s Laura Duclos walks through each race and highlights the influence of money in the primary contests.
