This guide explores how political and social systems used the goals of Black feminism to blame Black women for community struggles. Instead of addressing poverty and racism, policymakers twisted the need for fair treatment into a false narrative that Black families were broken by assertive women. The Myth of the "Matriarchy. "The 1965 Moynihan Report: A famous government study argued that a "Black matriarchy" (a family structure where women hold power) caused Black poverty. The Twist: Officials used the real struggles of Black women to shift the blame away from bad laws and job limits. They claimed strong Black women pushed men out of the home. Weaponizing Welfare Social Rules: In the 1970s and 1980s, welfare rules required poor Black mothers to name the fathers of their children to get financial aid. The Result: This often-forced fathers to hide from the government. It made it harder for families to stay together. Mislabeling Poverty -The Family Policing System: Today, the child welfare system frequently punishes Black families for being poor. The Tactic: Lawmakers use the feminist idea of "women's independence" to justify cutting off aid. They argue that if a Black mother cannot afford her child’s basic needs, it is her personal failing. The Real Cause: Systemic Racism Community Consensus: Most people agree that Black feminism aims to protect families from racism and unfair pay. The Reality: Many experts and community groups note that systemic racism, mass incarceration, and unfair housing laws are the true threats to Black family stability.
