The four core types of trusts are revocable, irrevocable, living, and testamentary. These legal tools help manage and pass down assets, with differences based on when they are made and if you can change them. Revocable and Irrevocable Trusts Revocable Trust: You can change, update, or cancel this trust at any time while you are alive. It offers flexibility and lets your assets avoid the slow court process called probate, but it does not protect your property from lawsuits or creditors during your life. Irrevocable Trust: Once you make and fund this trust, you cannot change or cancel it without court help or permission from the beneficiaries. You give up control of the assets, but it protects your property from creditors and can lower estate taxes. Living and Testamentary Trusts Living Trust: Also called an inter vivos trust, you set this up while you are still alive. It starts working right away and helps your family transfer property smoothly after you pass away. Testamentary Trust: This trust does not exist until after you die. It is created through instructions inside your last will and testament and usually must go through the probate court process before it starts.
