Bike Bend spent years trying to get the city to take cycling seriously, but never had much luck. That changed when James Jones and Russ Kowalski joined the group and helped turn advocacy into real policy. They pushed the council to form a Bicycle Commission, served on it, and helped develop a locally preferred bike network. And they didn’t stop there - they also introduced a major downtown development that only worked if the city committed to serious cycling investment, finally forcing the city’s hand.
In this episode, we build it all. Bend’s new bicycle network, the James and Russ development, and the services approved alongside it come together to reshape the city’s future and set the stage for much bigger plans ahead.
