In November 1942, the Mediterranean theater became the focal point of the largest combined amphibious operation conducted in the Western Hemisphere up to that date. Operation Torch represented a profound turning point in World War II, bringing American, British, and Allied forces together in a synchronized strategic offensive designed to eradicate Axis control over North Africa. Conceived during high-level strategic conferences in Washington between President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the operation sought to relieve pressure on the Soviet front, prevent Axis forces from linking their Middle Eastern and Caucasian advances, and secure the vital sea routes of the Mediterranean. Over the course of 125 days of intense logistical preparation and strict operational secrecy, two immense naval convoys departed from bases thousands of miles apart in the United States and the United Kingdom, converging precisely off the shores of French North Africa.
On November 8, 1942, Allied forces launched simultaneous assaults against three primary operational sectors: Casablanca in French Morocco, and Oran and Algiers in Algeria. Despite intense naval resistance off Casablanca from shore batteries and the French battleship Jean Bart, and fierce early skirmishes at Oran where paratroopers were flown directly from British bases over fifteen hundred miles away, Allied forces swiftly established firm beachheads. The strategic capitulation of Algiers, negotiated through Admiral Jean Darlan, allowed Allied commanders under Lieutenant General Dwight D. Eisenhower to immediately initiate the drive east toward Tunisia. The objective was clear: seize the vital deep-water ports of Tunis and Bizerte before Axis forces could establish a defensive perimeter.
What followed was a dramatic race against both the enemy and the elements. Field Marshal Albert Kesselring rapidly ferried seasoned German and Italian divisions across the Sicilian narrows, fortifying the Tunisian plains and establishing paved forward airfields. As British First Army units under General Kenneth Anderson, accompanied by American and French contingents, advanced through Medjez el Bab and Beja, their supply lines became dangerously overextended.
Throughout the winter months, both sides engaged in a vast buildup of military power. The Allies established unprecedented transatlantic logistics, ferrying P-38 Lightnings via South America and assembling hundreds of Spitfires on Gibraltar, while integrating unified command structures under Harold Alexander, Arthur Tedder, Andrew Cunningham, and Carl Spaatz.
