The evolution of Cold War tactical air power took a monumental leap forward with the development of the Republic F-105 Thunderchief, a colossal aircraft that holds the distinction of being the largest single-engine, single-seat fighter ever constructed. The genesis of the F-105 began in 1951 during the height of the Korean War as Advanced Project 63. Republic's design uniquely focused on creating a tactical fighter-bomber with the specific capacity to carry nuclear weapons within an internal bomb bay. By September 1952, the USAF granted approval for the F-105A, though only two were eventually constructed due to rapidly shifting aerodynamic theories. The subsequent F-105B model incorporated vital area ruling, replacing straight lines with a contoured fuselage to overcome transonic drag. On May 26, 1956, the first F-105B took to the skies, a flight that ended in a perilous wheels-up landing across a salt flat when the nose gear jammed. The prototype was simply lifted, repaired, and reintegrated into the grueling test program.
