Safety is a priority across Stockholm's public transport network. In recent years, AI-powered cameras have been used to identify potentially dangerous situations in the metro, which helps prevent accidents and save lives.
In 15 of Stockholm's metro stations, surveillance cameras are connected to a video analysis system based on AI. The system has been trained to recognise certain behavioural patterns, which trigger an alert. For example, if a person moves too close to the edge of the platform.
The alert goes to a person at the Security Centre, who assesses the situation by looking at the video feed and – if needed – sends staff to be there for the person who might be at risk. The use of AI has sped up this process substantially.
Since its implementation in 2021, this technology has helped prevent 39 suicides.
