In 1997 the country of Albania experienced massive social upheaval that was sparked by the collapse of several large Albanian pyramid schemes. A majority of the country had invested in these schemes, some invested everything they had, and in the wake up the schemes’ collapse many took to the streets to protest these fraudulent businesses. To make matters worse, many government officials had promoted the schemes while profiting off of them.
I find the Albanian Civil War of 1997 an interesting case study as many of the factors leading up to social unrest can also be found in the US government’s handling of the rising MLM industry. MLMs turn billions in profit, and everyone in the US knows someone who’s been involved in an MLM … or has been in one themself. MLMs have embedded themselves into our government, and continue to use their lobbying power to change or prevent laws that could protect individuals from becoming victims of these schemes.
