Staff at a top-secret listening station near Scarborough were left feeling a little sheepish after monitoring a series of odd signals never before heard by the intelligence community.

Government eavesdroppers at Yorkshire's own GCHQ listening station were baffled when they began picking up high-pitched squeaks from the base's forest of aerial masts.

They thought they had uncovered a coded signal from a KGB agent trying to defect and secretly even entertained the possibility that an alien race was trying to make first contact. Yes GCHQ said that themselves.

The interesting incident took place here, at GCHQ Scarborough, a secret government radio station located on Irton Moor, on the outskirts of Scarborough in North Yorkshire.

It’s operated by the British signals intelligence service GCHQ.
