House Finch: originally, residents of Mexico and Southwestern USA, the House Finch was introduced to Eastern USA in the 1940s. In the middle 19th century, they were taken to Hawaii, and are now abundant there. Estimated USA population ranges from 260+ million to over 1.5 billion birds.
Cavity nests are built by the female, constructed of twigs and grass into a cup shape. Males may present the female with food, and feed her, as he does during incubation of the eggs, and during raising the young birds. The male is the primary feeder to the fledgelings.
Eggs are laid from February through August; egg incubation period is 12 to 14 days.
Shortly after hatching, the female removes empty eggshells from the nest, and carries fecal matter out of the nest. Parent birds prefer Dandelion seeds for their young.
