Very quick overview on the current version of the Horus X12S Radio from FrSky.
FrSky were kind enough to get one of these out to us for a quick try of the radio. From my understanding this radio will be sent to a number of select pilots to try out and provide feedback.
We were told we had the radio for a week and unfortunately we spent some of that time waiting for the neck strap to arrive but once it did we got it out to the field for a quick test flight using one of Thomas’ acro quads. If we’d had the neckstrap a few days earlier we would have race tested the Horus.
We’ve tried to be as open minded about sharing our thoughts and not only looking at it from our point of view but how others would use a radio like this.
Initially looking at the radio it’s pretty obvious that it’s geared around the high end market of RC where you’re after a no compromise quality radio with great switches and gimbals which the Horus X12S easily delivers on. The LCD Screen is really bright and even on a bright day like this, there was no issues viewing it.
Would have loved to have tweaked the radio and opened her up to ease the tension off the Gimbals but unfortunately with the time constraints that wasn’t possible.
Keeping in mind coming from the Taranis this radio is significantly heavier but and unexpected byproduct of that, is it feels more stable when at the controls. Make no mistake this is a great product, but it’s suitability will depend on the individual. I imagine if your a Heli Pilot or flying Jets, Scale etc this radio would be perfect. This is the segment of the market I think it’s most suitable for. This is just our opinion and keep in mind there are always exceptions.
For the sort of flying that Thomas and I do, I think this radio would be overkill. The weight and size would make it more difficult to manage than the Taranis, but that doesn’t mean the Taranis is perfect either and this radio does beat the Taranis in the Quality, build and feel department.
So FrSky now have the Two main Radios, the Taranis and the Horus X12S. I think there is a gap and I’ll explain why. The Taranis has proven itself as and extremely capable radio, but the Gimbals are not as smooth as some of the brand name radios, however it’s light and works a treat. I think what would be awesome is if FrSky Came out with a new radio that sits between the two and essentially offered a version of the Taranis with better gimbals and switches, but keep the form factor about the same.
