This setup allows the hookshot jump to dark Link's room (youtube.com/watch?v=EM6ami11Fbk) to be done in a minimum of two pauses, if you get both frames you're aiming for immediately. For those who don't know how timers interact with pausing, whenever you pause the timer will advance (even if no frames pass), which is why you can mash pause if you're early on either cue.
It's also perfectly reasonable to skip using the deku stick to line up and instead get in position manually. Just make sure you know where a good place to stand is that gives you a consistent visual cue.
