An angler fishing for striped bass last week off East Haven hooked something bigger — a 5 1/2-foot-long shark.

A group was fishing about 200 yards off the town beach when one of them hooked the sandbar — or brown — shark.

He was using an eel as bait, but the hook actually pierced the shark's eye, video shows. The anglers unhooked the fish and let it go, one said.
