In 1838, Georgetown University, a most prestigious school, sold 272 enslaved people of African decent to help preserve the institution. Georgetown has been working to have difficult conversations around its troubled legacy and how to rectify it. Composer Carlos Simon decided to use this opportunity to commemorate the GU272 with his debut album, "Requiem for the Enslaved," which he did in collaboration with Memphis rapper Marco Pavé. The two musicians, Carlos being an assistant professor in Georgetown's Department of Performing Arts and Marco being Georgetown’s First Hip-Hop Artist-In-Residence, are nominated for a 2023 GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Classical Composition.
