Canada Geese make a range of calls, including honks, clucks, murmurs, grunts and hisses. These calls are used for a variety of purposes. Uses of the goose’s loud honk include marking territory, warning off intruders, calling to its mate, getting ready for flight, and keeping the flock together in flight.
When they feel threatened, Canada Geese hiss...for example, when a human or other animal gets too close to their nest.
Canada Geese also make softer clucks, murmurs and grunts. Uses include communication with goslings and between a mated pair, and social vocalisations that help geese stay connected with each other in the flock.
With the flock in this video, there’s the odd loud honk but most of the calls are softer social vocalisations. However, you can see geese hissing when a Great White Egret gets too close!
