Today, my wife and I share each of our top 5 lessons from our first year homesteading. We did not grow up in the country, gardening, or raising livestock, so we are on the learning curve!

We work together on many aspects of our homestead, but we each have our specialty homesteading skills, too. She gardens. I maintain the property. We work together to care for the cattle. We also each have our own perspectives, so it's no surprise that different lessons stood out to each of us.

Homesteading is about working toward a more self-sufficient lifestyle. A key to becoming more self-sufficient is to start slow and only add more to your homestead as you can handle it. If you take on too much too soon, it is not sustainable, you can't keep up with it, and that is the antithesis to being self-sufficient. This year was all about laying a solid foundation for us to build on for the future, and all things considered, we count it a success!
