Streetfilms® | Hold Your Own Candidates Bike Tour! Meet Some of the Challengers for NYC’s District 26 City Council @StreetfilmsCommunity | Uploaded March 2021 | Updated October 2024, 5 hours ago.
In NYC Council District 26, Jimmy Van Bramer, who has been a big advocate of much good bike infrastructure, is term limited and thus this Fall the seat will be filled by someone new. It's a wide open race with at least a dozen candidates running.

The residents of the Queens district which encompasses Long Island City, Sunnyside, Astoria and Dutch Kills, want to see whomever is elected can also be a bike and safe streets champion so organizers put together a bike ride which featured over 75 participants and amazingly were able to get a 9 of the 26th District candidates to take part.

The challengers were taken on a tour of some of the best biking in the district including Skillman Avenue, Queens Boulevard, Vernon and the Crescent Street bike lanes, but also required to ride thru some of the more dangerous intersections, places with obstructed lanes and major routes with no bike infrastructure at all.

It was also a great way for voters and candidates to interact instead of the usual Zoom Covid world most events are constrained to.

The organizers hope to see this multiply across many races in NYC: council races up to mayor. And also throughout the state and other cities across the United States.
