Emmett Ethridge Butler, also known as E.E. Butler, was the first black physician to receive privileges to practice medicine in Hall County, Georgia. A graduate of Morehouse College and Meharry Medical College, he came to Gainesville in 1936. He was the first African American to serve on the Board of Education, and today would be called a community organizer. A high school and major roadway in Gainesville are named in his honor.
