Hiking to an old stone Indian hogan in the desert --which, when you stop to think about it, is truly amazing that it's still standing after all these years!
It's nteresting to think about who built it, and when --and what else was going on in the world at that time.
I have no way of knowing, but I would guess it was built maybe 200 years ago? I can't imagine these rocks would stay stacked longer than that -- but then again, this area doesn't see much rain, and no snow or ice...so it could be even older.
This little stone hut could have been standing just like it is today when George Washington crossed the Delaware, Abraham Lincoln was shot, John C. Fremont made his first foray into the West, and the first settlers' wagons started rolling across the plains. And whoever lived in it had no idea what was headed their way.
Today, the skies above the hogan twinkle with Starlink satellites at night -- and the deafening blast of F-16 fighter jets by day, which come screaming through this desolate valley on a low-altitude training route, sometimes just hundreds of feet above the rough mud roof of this primitive dwelling.
Yet, it still stands! And I think that's pretty cool.
