Hiking the Hoh River Trail: Olympic National Park
Every few years my brothers and I try to get together for an epic adventure in the wilderness. These "Brothers Camp outs" have been mostly in the winter in the past, with our last one in Lassen Volcanic National Park in California. We always try to get into the backcountry and enjoy the raw wilderness, free from distractions.
With our youngest brother Jason starting medical residency back East, it was once again time to go on an adventure (before he would be unable to for several years). We decided to hike the Hoh River trail in Washington's beautiful Olympic National Park. Known for its lush greenery and abundant wildlife, it seemed like a perfect fit.
We spent two days and two nights backpacking through the pristine backcountry of the Hoh Rainforest. We covered over 30 miles, going all the way up to Martin's Creek and back, as well as some small side trails. There were very few people on the trail, and the weather for the most part was perfect. We frequently came upon majestic Roosevelt Elk, and were even treated with seeing a whole herd crossing the river.
This hike is awesome and I'd highly recommend it. Backcountry permits for the trail cost 8 dollars per person, per night, and permits come on a first come first serve basis.
