We often forget the month of Muharram: the new year in the Islamic calendar. Another year, a changing of tides, and an opportunity for presence with ourselves and with Allah ﷻ.
As you pause and reflect on your year –what’s gone past, what you’d like to see coming– allow yourself to sit with what’s also gone right, what went wrong, and where you can improve.
If there’s anything you’ve been holding on to that is now holding you back, this is an opportunity to let go and trust that Allah does not define you by your mistakes, but in how you return to Him.
Keep your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allah and the seeking of forgiveness. Don’t underestimate its power. Say “Astaghfirullah” as often as possible. You can say it any time of the day, while on your daily walk, cooking, on your commute, or in between tasks at work.
Eventually, aim for 100 istighfār in one sitting, as that is the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
It might sound like a lot, but with intention and consistency, it becomes second nature.
“But Allah would never punish them while you ˹O Prophet˺ were in their midst. Nor would He ever punish them if they prayed for forgiveness.”
Qur’an, 8:33
