It's far too common for women to be told they can't have the dose of hormone treatments, especially estradiol, that actually makes them feel well.
On my @drlouisenewsonpodcast this week, Rosie Moss, host of @widowed_af, told me that finding my @newson.health clinic was the first time she felt truly listened to, and the higher dose of estradiol we prescribed finally worked for her. When her circumstances changed and she asked to move back under NHS care, she was refused that same dose and offered a much lower one instead, despite it initially being prescribed by qualified specialists.
Some women need higher doses of estradiol than others just for adequate absorption of the hormone through the skin into the body. This is very basic pharmacology.
A private psychiatrist can usually prescribe an off-label higher dose of antidepressants without questions asked by the patient’s GP, so it's hard to understand why women's hormone treatment is held to a different standard. The real risk isn't a higher dose, it's leaving a woman without the dose that keeps her well.
