The high school football season began Thursday night with six games involving local schools, including four matchups in Monterey County.
In South Monterey County, King City faced Greenfield in a South County showdown. With no score in the second quarter, Rocky Vazsquez handed off to Carson Tidwell, who broke free for a huge run, dodging tackles along the way.
In the third quarter, Tidwell found a crease on the 35-yard line and sprinted down the sideline for another touchdown. The Mustangs dominated the second half, defeating the Bruins 26-0.
North Salinas took on Live Oak at Alisal High. In the first quarter, with the Vikings leading 13-7, Praise God Ofobuike of Live Oak returned a kickoff for a touchdown, putting the Acorns ahead 14-13.
In the second quarter, Nathan Orozco of North Salinas answered with a kickoff return of his own, shedding a tackle at the 40-yard line and scoring to tie the game at 21 after a successful two-point conversion.
Before halftime, Jayden Gutierrez launched a pass to Jonathan Ramirez, who made an impressive catch in the back of the end zone.
New head coach Marc Ramos celebrated his first win as the Vikings triumphed 41-28.
At Monterey High, the Toreadores hosted Christopher High. In the second quarter, Naesean Mitchell dove into the end zone to give Monterey the lead. Christopher responded with a quarterback run through a wide-open hole to take a 7-6 lead.
Later in the quarter, Cassius Guillory fought his way into the end zone for Monterey.
Christopher made it close, but Monterey held on to win 27-26.
In Seaside, Monte Vista Christian visited the Spartans. Mustangs quarterback Evan Vessy connected with Jordan Ramirez for a solid gain, leading to a field goal by Massimo Melo to make it 10-2 Mustangs.
Down 16-2, Seaside’s Josiah Escort scored on a goal-line run with strong blocking, but Monte Vista Christian held on to win 16-8.
In road games, Marina fell to Independence in San Jose, 21-12, while Rancho San Juan started its season with a narrow 22-21 victory over Gilroy.
