The Monterey County Coroner’s Office has released the identity of the man killed in a shooting Sunday morning in King City.
According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and King City police officers responded to reports of gunshots near North Second Street and Lynn Street just after midnight. The area is near the Hartnell College King City Education Center, north of Broadway.
They found a person suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man was identified as 42-year-old Omar Tellitud Chavez of King City.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is leading the homicide investigation.
Investigators are asking anyone with information that could help identify the person responsible to contact them. They are also seeking surveillance footage from businesses and doorbell-camera video.

Hartnell Community College provided the following statement:
"Hartnell Community College District is aware of a recent incident near the King City Education Center in King City and takes matters of this nature with the utmost seriousness.
"The safety of our students, faculty, staff, and community is our highest priority. We are in close communication with the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, and we can confirm there is no immediate threat to the campus. We will continue to follow the guidance of local law enforcement as this situation develops. Updates will be shared as more information becomes available and as it is appropriate to do so."
