Edit: This is not the current strat. This strategy was never done on console and is much harder than what you see in runs today.
Cronikeys has recently been working on a new version of Mupen made to emulate DK64 accurately. It is still a work in progress, but using one of the demo versions (not for distribution, just wait until it is complete) I was able to TAS what I've referred to as "the last big, feasible any% trick still to be found". Well, now it is found.
Things this trick lets you do:
1. Skip Crystal Caves, 3 moves (Monkeyport, PT Twirl, Super Simian Slam), and a rainbow coin in any%. Hard to estimate how much this saves...I'd estimate about a minute. Crystal Caves was only entered in order to buy Monkeyport, and the other two moves and extra rainbow coin are bought in order for Cranky to sell you Monkeyport. This reaches Helm without the move.
2. This is probably the fastest way yet to get to Hideout Helm from Frantic Factory or from the start with W4 active. Basically, this is best for any category that goes to Factory but not Castle.
3. This allows a new low% of 0.5% - the only items you need are keys 3 and 8. It skips the previously needed key 5 or key 2.
4. You can now get to K Rool with only DK, and can thus unlock any kong through his fight using a similar method as King Kutout Kongs (see one of my previous vids). It is not faster to unlock kongs this way, since you have to play through the fight to reach them, then exit, buy moves, and re-enter.
5. You can now get Chunky without Lanky...good riddance stupid orangutan.
6. You can now beat the game without going to Angry Aztec, but it is not faster.
How to perform:
1. Get a program with savestates....this trick is so hellish it is very unlikely you'll be able to get it in real time your first time. I don't think this trick is viable for real time runs, but I also haven't been able to try yet. It might be fine for challenges that are not concerned with taking a long time to do the trick.
2. Double jump to the pipe by Factory. You can also lag moonkick with oranges from the ramp leading up the island.
3. Double jump and clip into the cannon. You can also lag moonkick with oranges from the pipe you are standing on.
4. In this video, I throw 4 oranges. This is completely optional, but it might make your life a bit easier by increasing the lag slightly for step 6.
5. Go to the back of the cannon and kick up the slope (be warned that many times you'll just clip through the slope and have to start over). Once you are clipped, jump and navigate the pathetic camera angles to be behind the cannon room.
6. Do an falling edgekick off the back of the cannon. You'll have to be close to the side of the cannon as you want your kick to carry you slightly up the slope before you take off. This will give a much needed extra few inches of height.
7. While in footrise, clip out of the cannon in the same place as step 5. There are a lot of things around that want to lessen or kill your height gain, so be prepared to navegate a minefield while going up. Try to stay near the front of the ship.
8. At the peak of your rise, face the edge, jump, and aerial attack and pray that you clip slightly into his chin and grab the edge.
9. Pull yourself up and walk in...and if you are DK alone get ready for more stupid orange clips as you try to get into/navigate helm.
To clarify, the slopes in the cannon are slippery, so you cannot moonkick off them. When I do the edgekick, I'm on the flat ground just in front of the slope.
