In this vlog I explore more of the Charente and northern Dordogne while considering whether France could become my next home.
After staying in Angoulême in an Airbnb, I explain why it works well as a base for exploring the surrounding countryside, even though it’s not somewhere I would personally choose to live. From there I head out to see some of the villages people often describe as the prettiest in the region.
Verteuil-sur-Charente is famous for its fairytale château overlooking the river. It’s a small picturesque village with a relaxed atmosphere, a few cafés and restaurants, and beautiful river walks. The château is said to be one of the most photographed in the Charente, and even when it isn’t fully open to visitors, people still come to admire it from the outside.
Nanteuil-en-Vallée has a completely different feel. It’s smaller and quieter, tucked into a green valley. Known for its historic abbey church and peaceful gardens, the village feels calm and almost hidden away compared with some of the more visited places in the region. Walking through the streets you mostly hear birds and the occasional church bell.
I also visit Marthon and Nontron while exploring this part of southwest France. Each place has its own character and gives a different glimpse into life in rural France.
This trip is part of my journey exploring the possibility of moving from Portugal to France, so I’m sharing what these towns and villages actually feel like when you visit them, not just what they look like in a travel guide.
