Attacking behind the opponent's blade can be highly effective - if done right. In his 9th part of his Primo Assalto for the Longsword, Achille Marozzo initiates the play with a thrust to then slice behind the blade. We present the action as a solo drill, partnered and sliced into its parts with gear put on. Enjoy!
If you ever wanted to learn longsword, this series is for you! Here we take apart Achille Marozzo's (1531) book on fighting with the spada da due mane (two-handed sword). In his Assalti he gives you a couple of nice exercises to work on your longsword techniques. Marozzo lived and taught historical fencing in Bologna along with several other surviving sources, hence this style of fighting is often referred to as Bolognese fencing.
In historical fencing or HEMA (for Historical European Martial Arts) we reconstruct sword fighting systems from historical sources. Our club focuses on Italian medieval and renaissance sources, fencing with the Spadone (Two-Handed Sword), Spear, Sidesword (One-Handed Sword) together with Shield, Cape, Dagger, you name it!
