This is another trip down the rabbit hole. In some previous videos I made hardtack with 3D printed cutters. Max Miller came out with year old hardtack and made a historic soldiers dish called Hell Fire Stew.
This dish makes the best of the field rations issued to soldiers during the Civil War. Hardtack is dry as a brick, and it will soak up any moisture from grease, water, coffee, your mouth, etc...
Recipe
~1 cup hardtack, crumbled with any tool possible (rifle but, bullets, hammer, stones etc...)
~1 cup water
~ 1 lb ground beef, pork, salt pork, or other meat
salt & pepper, garlic, onion or other seasonings as available
1. Break up the hardtack into small bits. Historically soldiers used their rifle butts to hammer it in a sack. You can use a clean regular hammer, meat tenderizer, rolling pin or cast iron frying pan to do this in your kitchen.
2. Soak the hardtack bits as long as possible before cooking. I soaked mine overnight, half-hour you may have some hard chunks still.
3. Cook your meat till done. Save the grease in the pan.
4. Carefully place the soaked hardtack in the grease. Fry the hardtack till it browns and most of the water is out of the mix.
5. Combine with the cooked meat. Add seasoning as available.
