A man once asked God to show him the difference between heaven and hell.
God first took him to hell.
To his surprise, there was a magnificent banquet table overflowing with delicious food. Everything anyone could ever want was there. Yet the people around the table looked weak, miserable, and angry.
The man noticed that everyone had a spoon with a handle so long they couldn’t bring food to their own mouths. They struggled, fought, and cursed one another, yet no one could eat.
Then God took him to heaven.
To the man’s amazement, it was the very same table. The same incredible feast. The same long-handled spoons.
But there was one difference.
Everyone was feeding one another.
They were joyful, healthy, and overflowing with gratitude because each person’s needs were being met through love.
Whether this story is historical or simply a parable, it points to a profound truth.
Heaven and hell are first and foremost states of consciousness.
When we live from separation, self-interest, fear, and the illusion that it’s all about “me,” we create hell—regardless of where we are.
When we awaken to our Oneness with God and with one another, love becomes our nature. We naturally serve, encourage, forgive, and care for each other. In that consciousness, heaven is revealed.
Jesus said the greatest commandments are to love God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself.
Perhaps the only question that really matters is:
Are we loving one another?
Because wherever love is lived, heaven is already breaking through.
