Most people don’t realize they’re holding their breath throughout the day.

When we unconsciously stop breathing, our body interprets it as a sign that something is wrong. It begins preparing for fight-or-flight, releasing stress hormones like cortisol and shifting the nervous system into survival mode.

That response is incredibly useful if you’re running from a 3,000-pound gorilla.

But when you’re sitting in a business meeting, answering emails, or washing dishes, your body is reacting to a danger that doesn’t actually exist.

The good news? You can interrupt that stress response with something as simple as your breath.

Here are three practices to begin today:

1. Notice when you’re holding your breath. Awareness is the first step. Throughout the day, pause and ask yourself, “Am I breathing?”
2. Practice belly breathing. Let your diaphragm do the work. Breathe slowly through your nose, allowing your belly to expand on the inhale and gently fall on the exhale. This signals safety to your nervous system.
3. Practice the 4-7-8 method. Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, then exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 seconds. Repeat 3–5 rounds to calm your mind and body.

Your breath is one of the fastest ways to influence your physiology. Slow your breathing, calm your nervous system, lower unnecessary stress, and return to the present moment.

Your body is always listening to the way you breathe.
